Is Cumberland Medical Center closing?

Rural hospitals have closed across the country, and rural maternity units have closed faster still. Anyone weighing a move to a county of 64,480 people is right to check. The checking is sensible. The rumor is not true.

Cumberland Medical Center is part of Covenant Health and lists maternity among its current services. 1 If you read something suggesting otherwise, check the date on it before you act.

The hospital being open is not the same as every kind of care being nearby. Two different facts, and only one of them gets rumors.

For cardiology and orthopedics, care generally means a drive to Knoxville or Cookeville. The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment recorded heavy dissatisfaction with local specialty access among residents, while focus groups noted that access is improving. 2

If you have a cardiac condition, an orthopedic surgery ahead of you, or a spouse who does, that drive is a recurring feature of your life here, not a one-off. It is worth doing once, in the season you would actually be doing it, before you decide.

Cumberland County is a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area for primary care, mental health and dental care, and a Medically Underserved Area. 2 Those are not adjectives. They are designations with numbers behind them.

Tennessee's mental health provider ratio is 500 to 1, so the county figure of 2,491 to 1 is roughly five times the state's. Mental health is the top priority in the county's 2025 health needs assessment. The county suicide rate is 23.9 per 100,000, against 16.9 in Tennessee and 14.0 nationally. 2

The dental figure has the most practical bite for a new arrival. At 2,762 to 1, roughly double the national scarcity, getting onto a list as a new patient takes longer than people expect. If you are moving here, start that before you arrive rather than after.

One more figure that shapes the county around you: 15% of adults under 65 have no health insurance, against 11% nationally. 2 That does not affect a Medicare-age household directly, but it does affect which practices stay open and how busy the emergency department is.

There is a live disagreement about who pays for ambulances here, and it is a funding fight rather than a service gap. County EMS ran a loss of $2.2 million in fiscal 2024-25. The City of Crossville has explored running its own service, and county EMS has warned that splitting the service would slow response times, since a large share of county calls come from inside the city. 3 4

The matter was unresolved when these figures were checked. For a household where a stroke or a cardiac event is a realistic possibility, this is the county debate worth following, and it gets far less attention than the hospital rumor does.

1. Call the practices you would use and ask whether they are accepting new patients, and how long the wait is. Ask a dentist first.
2. If you are on a Medicare Advantage plan or considering one, confirm directly with the insurer which local providers are in network, and which Knoxville and Cookeville specialists are.
3. Make the drive to the specialist you are most likely to need. Do it on a weekday morning.
4. Ask your current specialists whether they will keep seeing you, and how records transfer.
