Is Cumberland Medical Center closing?

Rural hospitals have closed across the country, and rural maternity units have closed faster still. Anyone weighing a move to a county of 64,480 people is right to check. The checking is sensible. The rumor just isn't true.

Cumberland Medical Center is part of Covenant Health and lists maternity among its current services. 1 If you read something suggesting otherwise, check the date on it before you act.

The hospital being open is not the same as every kind of care being nearby. Two different facts, and only one of them gets rumors.

Cardiology and orthopedics have local addresses. Cumberland Medical Center lists a full cardiology line, Crossville has cardiology and orthopedic practices, and Parkway Cardiology keeps an office in the Glade itself. 2 What the local system doesn't do sends you down the mountain, and the 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment recorded heavy dissatisfaction with local specialty access among residents, while focus groups noted that access is improving. 3

Here is what that drive actually is, measured on the road network rather than guessed at. Cookeville Regional Medical Center is 45 miles from Fairfield Glade, about an hour. The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville is 75 miles, about an hour and a half. From Crossville itself the same two are 36 miles and 70 miles. 5

Those are routing estimates without live traffic, so a real journey usually runs longer. They also assume a central starting point. Fairfield Glade is large enough that the far end of it adds several miles again.

If your care ends up at one of those centres, because the case is complicated or because that is where your surgeon works, the drive is a recurring feature of life here, not a one-off. Do it once, in the season you would actually be doing it, before you decide.

Cumberland County is a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area for primary care, mental health and dental care, and a Medically Underserved Area. 3 Both are formal designations, awarded on measured ratios rather than on impressions.

Tennessee's mental health provider ratio is 500 to 1, so the county figure of 2,491 to 1 is roughly five times the state's. Mental health is the top priority in the county's 2025 health needs assessment. The county suicide rate is 23.9 per 100,000, against 16.9 in Tennessee and 14.0 nationally. 3
